Some of the best things in Life are not found in work. Work, is sometimes therapeutic; for sure, I need to work to be happy. However, the more I progress into Life… into work and relationships, I think work is something one must do… Its very disciplining and greatly tempers the mind. Its useful. It could earn you a living. However, the truth I find is that work is not a fuel, neither is it a reason. Work cannot inspire me. OK sure! Terrific deadlines that pose challenges can… But not in a manner that is lasting and fulfilling. It is a feeling of having met the challenge or beaten the fatigue or the odds. Let me conclude simply that I feel work does not fill your heart or bring you sleep.
At the end of the day, even if I topped the Course… Im not going to be happy unless I have people to share it with. I don’t know… don’t think… if most people are this way? I think so… OK! I have no idea. One lesson gleaned over two years: never generalize or guess the sentiment of about 200 people at one go. You’re usually wrong. :)
The best things in life are the unsaid… the indescribable… and fleeting. Im not a poet… not much of it, anyhow… :)The best things in life are shared… It is often in giving to another heart. :) Let me say here I have spent many years filling my Life with work and work-related deadlines…
So Im guessing now I understand why the phrase ‘Work-Life Balance’ becomes so weighty in Corporate Life. Its actually good… the separation of ‘work’ and ‘Life’… :) Its good to know…heartening to know that Work is not = Life. That means there is still hope in this world… So to say…:) OK, to refrain from foofy statements… The world would be in a very worrisome state if this sentiment was otherwise, is what Im trying to say.
In MBA, with these crazy schedules, and the kind that is in corporate-life, one is tempted into a sort of blinkered lifestyle that could help you meet the deadlines, but you have compromised on something in the bargain: sleep/food or family. I don’t know… if you’ve thought of it from this angle... Think about your day carefully. Unless you’re the kind who’s made your family in campus (no pun! It’s a metaphor) :) then you will have made all those small choices, involuntarily, or out of habit, of choosing between work or Life.
Oh yea, by the way, those choices define the person you are, I think. :)
Over time, we all choose who we want to be. The choices we make are all going to be pointed toward this basic end we have assigned for ourselves. Apart from sounding profound, do these words bring out what Im saying? We can choose who or how we want to be: to what brings us peace. However, this choice is beyond the obvious. It need not seem right in the immediate. And that’s where we could be tempted to go wrong.
Consult your Heart. It will tell you always. You can deal with it if you go wrong. But it never lies. If you can learn the language it speaks, you can make your peace with Work and Life. Until then, keep going! :)
